Two employees at a Ford dealership have been terminated following an investigation into a deeply offensive incident in which a racial slur was printed on the oil change reminder stickers of multiple customers. The discovery has left affected vehicle owners feeling humiliated and questioning how internal safeguards and accountability measures failed so profoundly.
The controversy centers around Rusty Eck Ford, where an employee reportedly entered the N-word into the shop’s computer system while generating a reminder sticker for his own vehicle after servicing it at the dealership. According to official statements released by dealership management, the employee failed to clear the derogatory language from the system after printing his own sticker. As a result, the offensive text remained active in the software, subsequently appearing on the reminder stickers printed for at least four unsuspecting customers who brought their vehicles in for routine maintenance.
For weeks, Larry Martin, Jr., a Black man who was among the affected customers, remained entirely unaware of what had been printed on his vehicle’s service reminder. The reality of the situation only came to light when dealership representatives contacted Martin directly, asking him to bring his truck back in so they could inspect the sticker. Upon looking closely at the document, Martin discovered the explicit racial slur printed directly beneath the standard service greeting, which read, "THANK YOU. COME AGAIN!" followed by the offensive term.
Initially, the dealership’s response was minimal. When Martin was brought in to address the issue, representatives offered to replace the offending sticker and assured him that the actions of the individual employee did not reflect the values or character of the company. For Martin, however, that initial gesture fell woefully short of addressing the gravity of the situation.

"It’s humiliating… it carries a lot of weight, and every time I get in my truck, this is what I’m thinking. It doesn’t go away," Martin said in an interview with local station KAKE News. "I feel belittled, and I just want to know why."
An Insufficient Response and Expanding Revelations
As news of the incident spread, Martin’s family members voiced deep dissatisfaction with how Rusty Eck Ford managed the aftermath. His daughter, Kelsey Martin, spoke out publicly about the dealership’s initial handling of the grievance, emphasizing that a simple apology and a replacement sticker were wholly inadequate responses to such a severe violation of dignity and respect.
"No one deserves to be humiliated like this," Kelsey Martin told reporters. "An apology just isn’t enough, and it doesn’t suffice for the embarrassment that my father has experienced."
Following the initial public outcry and a tepid preliminary statement from management confirming that an investigation had been initiated and an employee fired for inappropriate conduct, dealership representatives sat down with members of the Martin family. During this meeting, the family raised critical questions and presented additional details that prompted management to broaden their internal review.

That expanded investigation uncovered a wider scope than initially acknowledged. Management determined that not only had the original employee entered the offensive language, but a second employee had actually discovered the slur within the computer system and removed it. However, that second employee failed to report the incident to management, allowing the initial harm to go unchecked and unaddressed until customers began coming forward. Consequently, the second employee was also terminated by the dealership.
In subsequent statements, Rusty Eck Ford emphasized that the company maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding racial, hateful, discriminatory, demeaning, or derogatory conduct by any member of its staff. Management reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all customers and employees, though the damage to public trust had already been done.
This incident highlights a troubling pattern within the automotive service industry, where similar offensive incidents have previously surfaced at other dealerships across the country. In 2023, a service crew at a Volkswagen dealership was caught engaging in comparable misconduct by typing a racial slur onto a customer’s oil change reminder sticker. In another notable historical case, a Nissan dealership in New York was involved after a Wisconsin dealership printed the same racial slur on a female customer’s maintenance reminder, prompting subsequent corporate restitution efforts.
As the situation at Rusty Eck Ford continues to be scrutinized by the local community and patrons alike, the long-term impact on the dealership’s reputation remains to be seen. For Larry Martin and his family, the experience serves as a painful reminder of persistent prejudices, leaving them to navigate the aftermath of an institutional failure that a simple sticker replacement could never truly fix.
