In the realm of high-performance luxury crossovers, consumer demand is rarely dictated by strict rationality. Buyers shopping in the upper echelons of the compact performance segment are looking for presence, prestige, and a surplus of capability that far exceeds the demands of daily commuting. Recognizing this dynamic, BMW is injecting even more adrenaline into its upcoming model year lineup. The Bavarian automaker has announced a notable power increase for the M Performance version of its popular utility vehicle, ensuring it remains fiercely competitive in an intensely contested segment.
For the 2027 model year, the BMW X3 M50 xDrive receives a substantial 44-horsepower bump, pushing its output to an impressive 437 horsepower. This upgrade is extracted from the same powerhouse that enthusiasts have come to know and love: the tried-and-true 3.0-liter turbocharged B58 straight-six engine. This fresh injection of power represents a significant step up from the 2026 model, which topped out at 393 horsepower.
The added muscle translates into sharper performance figures on the track and the highway. The luxury performance crossover can now sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a brisk 4.3 seconds, or a blistering 4.0 seconds flat when utilizing a standard one-foot rollout. For comparison, BMW previously listed a 4.4-second 0–60 mph time for the preceding model year, though that figure was calculated without the rollout advantage. Beyond the raw numbers, the revised X3 M50 benefits from an updated exhaust system designed to deliver a more aggressive auditory experience, which BMW describes as both deeper and more resonant than its predecessor.
This power update places the X3 much closer to its primary rival in the luxury compact mid-performance crossover arena: the Mercedes-AMG GLC53. That archrival utilizes an identical format—a mild-hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six—to pump out 443 horsepower. While one can easily imagine the intense corporate rivalry and competitive boardroom discussions in Munich that prompted BMW to close the performance gap upon learning of Mercedes-Benz’s metrics, the result is a much tighter horse race in the showroom. Meanwhile, rounding out the German trio, the current Audi SQ5 produces a relatively modest 362 horsepower and manages a 0-to-60 mph time of 4.6 seconds, leaving a distinct performance tier between Audi’s offering and the muscular options from Munich and Affalterbach.
The New Black Package and Cabin Refinements
While every 2027 X3 M50 will benefit from the increased horsepower under the hood, individual personalization will vary through newly introduced cosmetic and functional options. Chief among these is the newly available Black Package, an $3,800 add-on that brings a stealthy, aggressive aesthetic to the performance crossover.

The Black Package equips the vehicle with striking black 22-inch M alloy wheels, matching black M Sport brake calipers, and black-and-silver M badges scattered throughout the exterior and interior. Inside, the package transforms the cabin into a dark, driver-focused environment dominated by extensive Alcantara suede trim, matte carbon-aluminum hard surfaces, smoky silver door sill trim, and a bespoke M steering wheel featuring a unique leather airbag cover.
Cabin materials and tactile quality have been subjects of critique for this generation of the X3 since its initial rollout. In response to owner and reviewer feedback, BMW is implementing broader interior updates across the entire 2027 X3 lineup, extending well beyond the high-performance M50 variant. All models will feature a new "PVC Softskin" surface applied to the dashboard area directly in front of the touchscreen, along with revised dash stitching.
Furthermore, the cabin experience is enhanced through subtle lighting and convenience improvements, including ambient illumination for the center console storage cubby and door handles, a redesigned glove box opener, and new stainless steel protective plates for the cargo area sill. These thoughtful touchpoints aim to elevate the perceived luxury of the interior, addressing earlier critiques regarding cabin appointments.
The enhanced 2027 BMW X3 M50, featuring its potent straight-six engine and refined cabin materials, carries a starting manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $67,500, excluding a mandatory $1,350 destination and handling charge.
