Human rights monitors report that these incidents are part of an escalating campaign of coordinated pogroms targeting local Palestinian villages—actions that witnesses and humanitarian groups say occur under the watchful eyes or active protection of the Israeli military.

Heidi Levine, a 64-year-old veteran freelance photojournalist working for The Washington Post, was severely beaten during an assault in Abu Falah, a village located northeast of Ramallah. According to eyewitness accounts, dozens of masked settlers descended upon Palestinian farmers who were attempting to gather their annual olive harvest, pelting them with stones, utilizing slingshots, and setting surrounding groves ablaze.

Levine, who was clearly identifiable in a protective press vest marked with "PRESS" on both the front and back, was knocked to the ground during the melee. Independent journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who witnessed the harrowing scene, described the brutality to international media outlets.

"We looked and saw that there was a journalist … on the ground with people surrounding her, beating her, clubbing her, robbing her, pulling her up, beating her again and kicking her," Nathaniel recounted.

Levine later told reporters that her attackers "just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times." During the onslaught, her cameras and mobile phone were stolen, according to The Washington Post.

Nathaniel noted that he and other bystanders managed to briefly reach Levine when the attackers pulled back momentarily, though she was in critical condition and unable to stand. "She was in very, very bad shape. She couldn’t really get up off the ground," he said. As volunteers attempted to carry her toward waiting paramedics, the masked settlers charged again, hurling another barrage of stones. Levine was eventually transported to a hospital in Ramallah for emergency medical treatment.

Matt Murray, executive editor of The Washington Post, condemned the violence in a strongly worded statement. "We are outraged by this unwarranted attack on a journalist doing her job and urge a thorough investigation and follow-through from authorities," Murray said.

What Happened During the Attack?

The violence in Abu Falah was not an isolated incident on Friday, but rather part of a larger pattern of unchecked aggression that unfolded simultaneously across multiple locations in the occupied West Bank.

According to witnesses and local reporting by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, the arrival of Israeli military forces did nothing to quell the violence against Palestinian villagers. Instead, witnesses stated that soldiers actively escalated the situation.

Nathaniel reported that shortly after the initial settler assault, Israeli troops arrived at the scene and immediately began deploying live ammunition and tear gas against the local Palestinian population. During the military intervention, a Palestinian man was shot in the leg.

"They do nothing to stop the settlers, and they speed into town and start firing their guns and tear-gassing, and they shoot a Palestinian man in the leg," Nathaniel stated. He added that armed soldiers pointed their weapons directly at paramedics who were attempting to treat the wounded man and physically shoved journalists on the scene. The injured Palestinian was ultimately evacuated in an ambulance, while the military forces withdrew, after which local residents bravely returned to their fields to salvage what remained of their harvest.

Where Else Have Olive Pickers Been Attacked?

The assaults in Abu Falah were mirrored by similar outbreaks of violence across the northern and central West Bank on Friday.

In the village of Burqa, east of Ramallah, four Palestinians sustained injuries during a coordinated settler raid on families gathering olives. In nearby Turmus Aya, agricultural workers were violently assaulted, and multiple vehicles and olive trees were torched by rampaging settlers. A local civil defense volunteer was also reported injured while attempting to combat the fires, according to Wafa.

These aggressive raids follow a string of recent fatalities and injuries associated with the agricultural season. On October 7, a 44-year-old Palestinian man, Ali Hassan Yasser al-Bazzari, was killed during a violent raid on harvesters near Burqa, northwest of Nablus. Witnesses on the ground reported that both civilian settlers and military personnel participated in the assault that led to his death.

Media workers documenting the crisis have increasingly found themselves in the crosshairs. Just days prior, on October 6, armed settlers severely beat Jaafar Ashtiyeh, a 58-year-old Palestinian photographer working for Agence France-Presse (AFP), near the town of Aqraba, south of Nablus. Ashtiyeh was struck in the head and torso with rifle butts and had to be rushed to the hospital with significant injuries, according to relatives, colleagues, and eyewitnesses.

How Widespread Are the Attacks?

Human rights monitors and local organizations emphasize that the current wave of settler violence represents a dramatic escalation in intensity and frequency, closely tied to the timing of the annual olive harvest.

According to data compiled by the Israeli human rights organization Yesh Din, at least 170 settler pogroms have been documented since September 27 alone, coinciding with the beginning of the seasonal harvest.

The systematic campaign of violence poses a severe, existential threat to Palestinian economic survival and freedom of movement. Beyond physical assaults on farmers and the deliberate destruction of ancient olive groves, settlers have increasingly engaged in the direct theft of crops, stripping Palestinian-owned trees of their yield before the rightful owners can complete their harvest.

Al Jazeera correspondent Tareq Abu Azzoum reported from the ground that the intimidation extends far beyond agricultural acreage, targeting residential homes, community infrastructure, and private vehicles in an apparent effort to render daily life untenable for rural populations.

"People there are still living under threat of attack, not just on their agricultural lands, but also on their properties," Abu Azzoum noted. "Vehicles and houses have been repeatedly hit by settler attacks, which have been used by the Israeli military, apparently, to create a deterrent environment with Palestinians expected to leave these areas so they can later turn them into Israeli settlements."

RAMALLAH, Occupied West Bank — A veteran American photojournalist was hospitalized and a Palestinian man was shot in the thigh by Israeli soldiers on Friday, following a coordinated wave of brutal attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian olive pickers and rural communities across the occupied West Bank.
