Lining the streets despite persistent rain, ecstatic fans welcomed the motorsport star, who spent time meeting supporters, signing autographs, and posing for photographs to commemorate the momentous achievement.

The day’s festivities culminated in a thrilling driving exhibition that saw Evans take First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth for a high-speed spin around Dolgellau’s main car park, much to the delight of the surrounding crowds.

By capturing the world title, Evans has cemented his name in sporting history as the first Welsh driver ever to become world rally champion. Speaking to the gathered crowds during the celebration, he took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the loyal fans who have backed him every step of the way since he first began his competitive career as a teenager.

Evans admitted that he felt "very lucky and honoured" that the special homecoming event had been organized in his honor, adding that he hoped his landmark success would help build "some awareness of the sport" across Wales and beyond. He confessed that he was particularly taken aback by the deafening cheers and enthusiastic reception he received from local school children during his tour of the area.

"Of course we’re used to it on events, but to have it at home is a bit surreal in a way," Evans reflected. "It’s a small community, obviously everyone around my age knows me as Elfyn so there’s no fuss. But maybe for the kids they’re only used to seeing me on TV so it’s a bit of a different reception."

Despite reaching the absolute pinnacle of his sport, the champion insisted that his newfound status would do little to alter the realities of his everyday family life. "Life at home is exactly the same, we still have the same battles to get the kids to school every morning as any other family," he said. Looking ahead to the future, Evans confirmed that his competitive drive remains completely undiminished. "I will continue to give my best, current or past form won’t alter that. I’m still hungry to try and achieve more in the sport and my approach won’t change."

The celebratory homecoming began earlier on Thursday with a deeply personal visit to Evans’ former school, Ysgol Bro Idris, where he was greeted by excited pupils and teachers who had watched his journey to the top with immense pride.

Among those deeply moved by the visit were 12-year-old students Esme and Lois, who described the experience as simply "amazing." Esme shared that she felt "so lucky" that a reigning world champion had taken the time to visit their rural institution. "We’re such a small place, but we have such amazing people here," she added.

Another student, 13-year-old Louie, had the opportunity to speak with the rally star directly during the school visit. "We spoke about how much the car was worth and how it felt to see him come first," Louie said. Having watched Evans clinch his historic victory, the young student added that the achievement "shows what Wales can do."

Meanwhile, classmate Oscar was particularly captivated by the championship-winning vehicle, which was placed proudly on display at the school grounds. "I’m proud of him for doing what he’s done, and he deserves more I reckon," Oscar remarked.

Following the heartwarming school visit, the celebrations shifted to Dolgellau’s Eldon Square. Despite the challenging weather conditions and persistent rain, crowds of dedicated supporters turned out en masse. While the majority of the attendees were proud locals hailing from the surrounding area, a number of fans had traveled significant distances specifically to witness the historic homecoming.

Taking to the podium to address the sea of supporters, Evans made sure to thank his family for their unwavering backing throughout the grueling years of his professional career. In a touching moment, he noted that his grandfather had "taught me to drive probably far too early."

Among the dedicated fans in attendance were Wyn Williams from Llanrwst and Neil Pringle from Betws-y-Coed. The pair had actually been present in Sardinia when Evans officially clinched the world championship title. Williams described the Dolgellau homecoming celebration as "the icing on the cake after being in Sardinia." Pringle echoed those sentiments, calling the evening "fantastic" and noting that the presence of the first minister at the event "shows what this means to Wales." Pringle added, "This is for Elfyn, his family and the country."

Heledd Edwards made the journey from Talerddig to Dolgellau specifically for the event, describing Evans’ remarkable perseverance throughout his career as a profound personal inspiration.

Members of Evans’ extended family were also spotted mingling proudly among the crowd. His aunt, Lowri Edwards, who traveled from Glan Conwy, shared her immense pride at having a world champion within the family, especially given how close he had come to the ultimate prize in previous years. "We’re absolutely thrilled, to be honest," she said. "He’s come so close and been terribly unlucky, finishing second five times—we’re absolutely thrilled."

The successful community event was coordinated with the assistance of Dolgellau Town Council. Deputy Mayor Nia Wyn Evans captured the collective mood of the region when she remarked: "We are absolutely thrilled and delighted to be able to welcome Elfyn back as a world champion; there’s a real buzz in the town."

Fresh from securing a historic motorsport milestone, newly crowned world rally champion Elfyn Evans was given a rapturous, hero’s welcome by hundreds of enthusiastic supporters during a vibrant homecoming celebration in his home county of Gwynedd.
