The military action comes as local rights monitors accuse the Houthi movement of mounting indiscriminate shellings that have left multiple civilians dead and wounded in the contested governorate of Taiz.

According to statements from government representatives, a total of nine airstrikes were conducted in the Taiz governorate on Tuesday. Five of the strikes hit positions in the Dhubab district, while another four struck targets in the al-Masrakh district. The Taiz Military Axis Media Center, which is affiliated with the Yemeni Ministry of Defence, reported that fierce ground fighting remains ongoing between government troops and Houthi fighters in the al-Shaqab area, located immediately south of Taiz city.

The military escalation on the ground unfolds against a backdrop of escalating civilian suffering. The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedom reported on Tuesday that Houthi shelling over the preceding 24 hours had killed at least five civilians in Taiz, including a five-year-old girl, and left 17 others injured. The human rights organisation accused the armed group of deliberately targeting residential neighborhoods with more than 180 projectiles, causing severe structural damage to at least seven homes.

The broader conflict in Yemen erupted in 2014 when the Houthis, a militant and political movement formally known as Ansar Allah, or Supporters of God, swept down from their northern strongholds and seized the capital city of Sanaa, forcing the internationally recognised government to flee. In response to the takeover, an international military coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in 2015 to back the ousted administration, igniting years of devastating warfare that created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

While a landmark United Nations-backed truce brokered in 2022 succeeded in halting the most intense nationwide combat operations, tensions have dramatically spiked across the country in recent months. The renewed volatility follows a dangerous turn in July, when the Iran-aligned Houthi movement declared a unilateral naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabian ports and commercial shipping lanes passing through the vital Bab al-Mandeb strait.

The aggressive posture translated into territorial gains in September, when Houthi forces launched a lightning ground offensive on Mocha, successfully pushing back government-aligned forces from the strategic port city. Later that same month, Houthi units swept through additional territory along Yemen’s western coast and the Bab al-Mandeb strait, seizing control of Mayyun Island, a strategically crucial landmass situated directly within the waterway.

As the violence continues to spiral across multiple fronts, international humanitarian agencies have issued urgent appeals for restraint. Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, warned that non-combatants across the wider Middle East are bearing the heaviest toll of intensifying hostilities, and she called on all warring parties to step back from the brink.

Civilians are paying an unacceptable price as a result of military operations in the region, Spoljaric said in a formal statement. She noted that within Yemen, the accumulating scale of death, population displacement, and structural damage to civilian infrastructure—particularly in urban centers such as Aden and Sanaa—is mounting at an alarming rate, mirroring a broader regional trend where civilian lives and vital facilities are repeatedly compromised.

According to United Nations figures, at least 46 civilians have been killed and more than 130 others wounded across Yemen since August alone, with a significant proportion of the casualties being children. Concurrently, the UN’s International Organization for Migration reports that more than 200,000 people have been newly displaced within the country since September.

The domestic conflict in Yemen has also increasingly spilled beyond its borders, drawing in neighboring states and regional powers. As fighting inside the country intensified, the Houthis launched a series of drone and missile attacks directed at Saudi Arabia’s critical infrastructure, including regional airports and oil facilities. Over the weekend, separate Houthi missile strikes targeting King Khalid Airport in Riyadh resulted in at least 14 deaths, drawing swift and widespread international condemnation.

In the wake of the Riyadh attacks, Saudi Arabia’s energy minister vowed that the kingdom would enact a serious response to safeguard its territory and national security. The security situation has also severely impacted regional aviation. Several major commercial carriers, including Qatar Airways and Emirates, the flagship carrier of the United Arab Emirates, have cancelled or suspended scheduled flights to Saudi Arabia and surrounding airspace in response to the persistent threat of aerial attacks.

Diplomatic efforts are running in parallel with the military developments. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz held discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Tuesday to address the worsening regional crisis. During their talks, Merz asserted that Iran must engage in serious, substantive negotiations, directly accusing Tehran of pursuing policies that destabilize the wider Middle East.

Simultaneously, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council. Taking to social media platform X following the meeting, Abdelatty emphasized that Gulf security remains inextricably linked to Egypt’s own national security framework.

Abdelatty also conducted phone diplomacy with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, urging an immediate halt to Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia. While regional intelligence and military analysts widely acknowledge that Tehran provides crucial financial, logistical, and military backing to the Houthis, many experts suggest that Iran’s operational leverage over the movement’s independent tactical decisions remains limited.

Forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognised government have carried out a series of intensive airstrikes targeting Houthi positions and military equipment in the country’s volatile southwest.
