However, Alcaraz still retained a narrow mathematical chance of stopping Zverev from seizing the top spot until he was beaten 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) by Belgium’s Zizou Bergs in a dramatic third-round encounter on Monday.

Reflecting on his momentous achievement, Zverev shared his immediate thoughts on capturing the milestone. "It’s been a fantastic season for me. Knowing that I will finish the year on top of the rankings is just a dream come true," said Zverev.

After experiencing the heartbreak of losing three major finals earlier in his career, the 29-year-old finally landed the first Grand Slam singles title of his career by triumphing at the French Open in June. He followed up that historic clay-court success with another brilliant victory at the US Open just last month, solidifying his status as the premier player in men’s professional tennis this year.

The 29-year-old has undeniably taken advantage of the physical and injury problems suffered by Spaniard Alcaraz and Italian Sinner—the two dominant figures who controlled the ATP Tour in the previous two seasons—to ascend to the pinnacle of the world rankings. Although Zverev cannot mathematically overtake Sinner in the live rankings until November 2 at the earliest, the premature end to Sinner’s season means the year-end crown is safely secured.

In doing so, Zverev will etch his name into the history books by becoming the first German player to end a calendar year as the world number one. Furthermore, he will achieve this feat as the oldest player in the history of the sport to capture the year-end top ranking for the first time in his career.

The journey to the summit has been far from straightforward for the German. After suffering a catastrophic and serious ankle injury during the 2022 French Open semi-finals against Rafael Nadal—an unfortunate mishap that kept him sidelined from the competitive tour for seven grueling months—Zverev had to rebuild his game, his fitness, and his confidence from the ground up. He successfully regained his place in the upper echelons of the sport and has remarkably remained ranked inside the world’s top four players continuously since March 2024.

Expressing his gratitude for the arduous comeback process, Zverev added, "So much work and effort have been put into achieving this goal, especially after coming back from the ankle injury. I look forward to finishing the season in style."

At the very start of the 2026 season, it seemed virtually unthinkable that anybody other than Sinner or Alcaraz would finish the campaign as the world number one. Going into 2026, Alcaraz led the men’s professional rankings with an imposing 12,050 points, closely followed by Sinner, who sat right behind him with 11,500 points.

The absolute dominance of the young pair—who had completely split all of the eight Grand Slam titles across the 2024 and 2025 seasons between them—was further illustrated by the astronomical points gap separating them from the rest of the professional field. At that point, third-ranked Zverev held 5,110 points, a tally that left him numerically closer to the 2,221st player in the professional rankings than it did to the dominant top two.

Yet, as the 2026 tennis season enters its final stretch, Zverev has successfully completed what many pundits and fans alike thought was a mission impossible. There is no escaping the overarching fact that Zverev has undeniably benefited from both Sinner and Alcaraz missing large, critical chunks of the season due to their respective injuries. Because of their absences, he won his prestigious French Open and US Open titles with at least one of the star pair sidelined from the draws.

In fact, both of his major tournament victories came entirely without him having to face Sinner, Alcaraz, or indeed any other player ranked inside the world’s top 10 players during those fortnights. Acknowledging these circumstances with characteristic candor, Zverev has previously stated that he would "maybe not" be considered the world’s best player if both of his primary rivals were fully "healthy and at the top of their game."

Nevertheless, professional sport operates on the reality of the draw, and the old adage maintains that an athlete can only ever beat whatever opponent is placed directly in front of them on the court.

Zverev has done precisely that throughout this remarkable campaign, recording the greatest season of a professional career which, at various points in the past, had threatened to fall short of the lofty, immense expectations placed upon him ever since he first emerged onto the global stage as a heavily touted teenage prodigy.

German tennis star Zverev was already on course to climb above current world number one Jannik Sinner, who has unfortunately been ruled out for the remainder of the year due to a lingering knee injury.
