By far the most impressive automotive facelift of this year has been the BMW 7 Series, which adapted extremely well to the automaker’s Neue Klasse design language. Following that successful transition, the rest of BMW’s lineup is clearly poised to adopt the same design philosophy with pretty great urgency. Evidence of this sweeping corporate shift has just been caught on camera at one of the world’s most demanding proving grounds, signaling that the high-performance division is next in line for a radical visual rethink.

Camouflaged prototypes of the seventh-generation M5’s upcoming mid-cycle refresh have been spied undergoing high-speed testing at the legendary Nürburgring. These early sightings reveal that the high-performance sedan will inherit the distinct "eye mask" headlight design seen on upcoming models like the new 3 Series and the fully electric i3. Whether or not you think that design direction is a good thing is ultimately up to you. The existing 5 Series’ styling has already proven to be a controversial topic among enthusiasts, and the broader Neue Klasse design language continues to divide opinions across the internet, even if many designers and commentators find plenty to praise in its bold proportions.

Beyond the aesthetic debates, however, this upcoming facelift is expected to bring substantial functional updates. At the very least, the M5’s mid-life refresh should introduce major technology improvements to the cabin, along with potential hardware and software optimizations to its powertrains and overall performance capabilities. These updates will be particularly interesting when applied to BMW’s expanding stable of electrified models, such as the current plug-in-hybrid M5 and its battery-electric sibling, the fully electric i5. As automotive markets lean increasingly toward electrification, keeping the flagship performance cars technologically cutting-edge remains a top priority for Munich.

Are Those Regular-Sized Kidney Grilles I See?

Even beneath the heavy camouflage wrap and the strategically placed fake body panels applied to the test mules spotted at the Nürburgring, automotive photographers and enthusiast observers can extract a tremendous amount of detail regarding the car’s eventual production appearance. The most striking change occurs at the front end, where the headlights have become noticeably more slit-like, narrow, and angular. This reshaping allows the entire front fascia to adopt a much more pronounced shark-nose profile, leaning heavily into classic BMW design cues of decades past.

Unlike the upcoming 3 Series variants, which feature a front end with virtually no traditional kidney grilles at all, the revised 5 Series and M5 appear to take a slightly different path. The spy shots indicate that the M5’s new, aggressive headlights will connect directly to a more prominent, traditionally shaped kidney grille structure. Interestingly, these grilles do not appear to serve a major functional cooling purpose—a continuation of a trend seen on the current M5, which already relies on only tiny active vents within its kidney surrounds. Instead, a smaller, wider cooling slit positioned beneath the central grille handles the necessary airflow. The net result is a snoutier, more traditionally proportioned BMW grille design that breaks away from the slab-sided look of the current standard 5 Series.

Accompanying this revised nose is a front bumper that looks significantly toothier, more aggressive, and far more technical in its surfacing. Early indications suggest this layout will grant the M5 a much more agreeable and purposeful face, steering clear of the slightly heavy or pudgy appearance occasionally attributed to the current model’s front overhang. Moving along the sides of the camouflaged prototype, exterior modifications are expected to be relatively subtle, likely amounting to newly sculpted side skirts and fresh aerodynamic wheel designs tailored to the updated platform.

Around the back, the revisions continue with modified taillight graphics that integrate more cleanly into the vehicle’s updated rear fascia. The rear bumper assembly and lower aerodynamic diffuser are also expected to be reshaped, though the rear-end changes represent a far less dramatic departure from the current car than what is happening up front. Inside the cabin, the vehicle is anticipated to receive a total overhaul to align its dashboard architecture, infotainment displays, and user interface with the minimalist, screen-forward philosophy established by the wider Neue Klasse family, a shift already hinted at by earlier interior spy photographs.

Industry watchers and market analysts expect the facelifted standard 5 Series range to make its official global debut at some point in 2027. The high-performance M5 variant is likely to follow closely on the heels of the standard models, or potentially be revealed alongside them in a synchronized rollout. As development continues at the Nürburgring and public roads across Europe, further details regarding powertrain specifications, battery capacities, and pricing will undoubtedly emerge.

The automotive world is constantly shifting its aesthetic boundaries, but few transformations have generated as much discussion in recent times as BMW’s sweeping design evolution.
