The strategic sale was finalized last year, a development that means both the 2026 spring and autumn editions of the fairs were successfully executed under the new corporate ownership of the global group.

For the art world, the acquisition represents a significant shift in the landscape of commercial art platforms. Independent has long occupied a unique space in the sector, balancing the aesthetic sensibilities of a museum exhibition with the high-octane commercial atmosphere of a marketplace. Elizabeth Dee, the founder and creative director of Independent, emphasized that the organization’s trajectory remains firmly on track.

“Independent’s future is bright,” Dee told ARTnews in an email regarding the acquisition. “With Informa as our partner, Independent is redefining what an art fair can be with the spirit of a museum exhibition and the energy of a marketplace.” Dee confirmed that she will maintain her leadership position, continuing to oversee the strategic direction and operations of both fairs, ensuring continuity for the galleries and collectors who have long supported the brand.

A New Chapter Under Informa’s Umbrella

Informa, a massive entity formed in 1998 and headquartered in London, operates as a powerhouse in publishing, business intelligence, and global exhibitions. Its portfolio is vast and diverse, spanning numerous industries including aviation, technology, health and wellness, fashion, jewelry, and luxury sectors like the boat and yachting industry. As a publicly traded company listed on the London Stock Exchange and a member of the FTSE 100 Index, Informa maintains a massive footprint, employing approximately 14,000 people across 42 countries.

The financial scale of the company is equally significant. According to the company’s report on the first half of 2026, Informa generated $2.7 billion in revenue with an adjusted operating profit of $723.7 million. The company is backed by a roster of major global financial institutions, including BlackRock, Norges Bank, Lazard Asset Management, Invesco, Newton Investment Management, and Artemis Investment Manager.

The acquisition of Independent marks a strategic milestone for Informa: it is the company’s first New York-based art brand. While the group already operates several high-profile ventures—including the Monaco Yacht Show and the world-renowned creative festival Cannes Lions—the addition of Independent adds a prestigious, curatorially driven art platform to its portfolio. Notably, Informa also oversees South Florida Ventures, which manages several prominent art events including Untitled Art, Art Miami, and Palm Beach Modern and Contemporary. Despite this shared ownership, Independent is set to remain a distinct entity, operating separately from the South Florida Ventures group.

A Legacy of Innovation and Curatorial Focus

The news of the acquisition was shared with exhibitors on a Friday afternoon. In a message to the fair’s community, Elizabeth Dee reflected on the timing of the deal. “On the eve of the milestone 20th anniversary of Independent, we decided that the timing was right to find a partner to support Independent’s continued growth while remaining true to our mission,” she explained. “We trust that the achievements of Independent in May and Independent 20th Century in September—both realized as part of Informa—speak for themselves and make evident our steadfast commitment to the high quality of the exhibitions.”

To understand the significance of this acquisition, one must look at the origins of the fair. When Independent launched in 2010, it did so with a mission to challenge the status quo of the art fair circuit. It debuted in a former warehouse in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, a space previously occupied by the Dia Center for the Arts. Cofounded by Dee, then a New York-based gallerist, and Matthew Higgs, the director of White Columns, the fair was designed to be a departure from the "booth-heavy" conventions of traditional trade shows.

From its inception, Independent distinguished itself through a fluid, open-plan layout that prioritized the viewing experience over the rigid grid systems favored by larger, more corporate fairs. Press materials from the early years avoided the term "art fair" entirely, favoring descriptions such as "collective," "consortium," and "hybrid model and temporary exhibition forum." This approach, which invited non-profit organizations to exhibit alongside commercial dealers, was revolutionary at the time and has since become a standard expectation for many high-end art gatherings.

Following its initial five-year run at the former Dia building, the fair relocated to Spring Studios in Tribeca in 2016. During this period of growth, the organization briefly experimented with an international presence, hosting Independent Brussels at the Espace Vanderborght, a former department store, between 2016 and 2018.

Continued Growth and Strategic Partnerships

The expansion of the brand continued in 2022 with the launch of Independent 20th Century. Conceived by Dee, Higgs, and Sofie Scheerlinck—a veteran of the TEFAF fair—the initiative was built with the explicit aim of revising art historical canons and creating a more diverse, inclusive representation of art produced between 1900 and 2000. After a four-year tenure at the Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan, the 20th-century fair moved to the iconic Breuer building for its 2026 edition, held just last week.

The 2026 calendar also marked a major expansion for the original Independent fair, which relocated to Pier 36 on the Lower East Side. This move allowed the fair to more than double its footprint, providing the space necessary for ambitious projects. Notably, the spring edition featured a landmark solo presentation of fashions by Rei Kawakubo, the visionary founder of Comme des Garçons, marking her first-ever art fair installation.

The move to the Breuer building for the fall fair also drew significant attention. The Brutalist landmark, famously acquired by Sotheby’s in 2023, saw the auction house act as a partner for the Independent 20th Century event. This venue change proved highly effective, allowing the fair to expand its roster to 57 exhibitors, a significant jump from the 31 galleries that participated in the previous downtown iteration. As noted in ARTnews’s coverage of the 2026 event, the fair succeeded in maintaining its intimate, viewer-friendly atmosphere despite the substantial increase in size and scale.

As Independent transitions into this new phase under the stewardship of Informa, the core leadership remains focused on preserving the identity that has made the organization a fixture in the New York art calendar. In her closing remarks to exhibitors, Dee expressed confidence in the future, noting that both the organization and its new parent company remain deeply committed to maintaining the creative and curatorial autonomy that has defined the fair for nearly two decades.

“We fully intend to shepherd and grow the organization as an outstanding curated platform for modern and contemporary art, as we always have done,” Dee concluded. “We are confident that this will provide new opportunities for Independent and for our participating galleries.” With the backing of a global leader in exhibitions and the continued guidance of its founding team, Independent appears poised to enter its third decade with its mission intact and its capacity for growth significantly enhanced.

Independent, the influential organization renowned for its two signature art fairs in New York—one dedicated to contemporary art in the spring and another focusing on 20th-century art in the fall—has been acquired by the London-based international conglomerate Informa.
