Speaking via videolink from Aden, Iyer reported that hunger and malnutrition are afflicting an ever-increasing number of children as a violent new wave of hostilities escalates across the war-torn country, shattering the fragile relative calm that had largely held since a 2022 truce.

"Conflict drives hunger, and hunger makes children more vulnerable to conflict," Iyer told journalists, emphasizing the vicious cycle trapping millions of vulnerable youths in the impoverished nation.

Mass Displacement Compound Vulnerabilities

The latest military escalation has unleashed a fresh wave of human displacement, uprooting nearly 130,000 people across Yemen over the past three weeks alone. Among this newly displaced population, an estimated 71,000 are children. The vast majority of those forced to flee have been driven from their homes or displaced internally within the southwestern governorate of Taiz, one of the most heavily contested regions in the country.

The mass movement of families has severed access to basic services, clean water, and nutritional support, leaving children extraordinarily exposed to disease and starvation. UNICEF has expressed profound alarm over what Iyer described as a "very visible increase in acute malnutrition among children" in the areas that aid workers have managed to reach.

Recent screening efforts conducted by UNICEF mobile teams in accessible parts of the country underscore the severity of the crisis. Out of nearly 2,900 children examined in recent weeks, more than a quarter were found to be acutely malnourished. Within that troubled cohort, approximately 200 children were classified as suffering from severe acute malnutrition—the most dangerous and life-threatening category of the condition.

A Nationwide Catastrophe Unfolding

UNICEF cautioned that these localized screening numbers represent only a limited snapshot of a much broader, nationwide catastrophe. Across the entire country, the agency projects that an estimated 2.2 million children under the age of five will suffer from acute malnutrition this year alone. Among them, more than half a million are projected to require urgent, life-saving treatment for severe acute malnutrition to prevent preventable deaths.

The physical toll of the renewed fighting extends far beyond nutritional deprivation. UNICEF has independently verified that at least 15 children have been killed and 14 others injured in conflict-related incidents since early September. Additionally, three children remain reported missing, leaving families in agonizing suspense.

"Beyond being uprooted from their homes, too many children have already paid the heaviest price in this conflict," Iyer said. "Behind every one of those children is a parent living through the unimaginable—grief, fear, or the agony of not knowing."

Renewed Civil War and Strategic Shifts

Yemen’s protracted civil war—pitting Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces against Iran-backed Houthi fighters—has intensified significantly this year, effectively collapsing the stalemate established by the 2022 truce.

In recent weeks, the Houthis have achieved dramatic territorial gains against the internationally recognized government forces. The group successfully seized the strategic port city of Mocha, subsequently taking control of nearly the entire Red Sea coast, including several offshore islands.

These rapid advances have granted the Houthis heightened strategic control over the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This critically important maritime passage has served as a vital channel for Saudi Arabia to ship oil out to international markets, particularly after the separate US-Iran conflict effectively shut down the Strait of Hormuz, complicating global energy supplies.

As the week progressed, Houthi forces continued their push, making advances toward Yemen’s central highlands even as direct battles with Saudi-backed government forces intensified on multiple fronts. The rapid southern sweep along the Red Sea coast has unleashed a devastating humanitarian crisis, uprooting tens of thousands of civilians, with many desperate families attempting perilous crossings of the Red Sea to seek refuge in Africa.

Disrupted Education and Urgent Appeals

The renewed violence has also dealt a severe blow to Yemen’s educational infrastructure. Over the past three weeks alone, 243 schools have been forced to close or suspend classes due to active fighting and insecurity, abruptly interrupting the education of nearly 140,000 students.

"We cannot keep asking children to survive what they should have never been exposed to in the first place," Iyer stated.

The UNICEF representative concluded with a firm appeal to all parties involved in the conflict, urging them to protect children, civilians, and essential civilian infrastructure. He called on combatants to uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and to facilitate safe, unhindered humanitarian access so that life-saving aid can reach the millions of children whose survival hangs in the balance.

GENEVA — A relentless intensification of fighting across Yemen has severely disrupted access to healthcare and treatment centers, driving a sharp and alarming rise in acute malnutrition among young children, the United Nations children’s agency has warned.
