The international FinTech heavyweights are making aggressive strategic moves to establish a permanent and formidable presence stateside, according to a report published Wednesday by the Financial Times.

Both companies achieved a major regulatory milestone earlier this year by securing conditional approval for U.S. banking charters. Building on this momentum, Brazil-based Nubank officially debuted its comprehensive American product offering this month. However, industry analysts and financial experts emphasize that the path ahead is fraught with complexity. The two digital banking giants face significant structural and competitive challenges as they attempt to crack a mature, highly saturated market dominated by entrenched domestic institutions.

According to industry reports, both companies are capitalizing on what insiders describe as an unusually lax regulatory window in the United States. The high expectations surrounding their potential success in the American market have played a substantial role in driving up their private and public market valuations. For the United Kingdom-based Revolut, proving its viability and scalability in the U.S. is particularly critical. The company needs to fully justify its staggering $115 billion valuation ahead of a heavily anticipated and planned initial public offering (IPO) projected for 2028.

The allure of the American financial landscape is difficult for global FinTechs to ignore. Nigel Morris, co-founder of Capital One and managing partner at venture capital firm QED Investors, which maintains an investment in Nubank, highlighted the immense stakes involved in cross-border expansion. Describing the country as the ultimate frontier for financial services, Morris noted that the U.S. represents the biggest prize in global banking. If a financial institution successfully cracks the U.S. market, the scale and revenue potential are massive, effectively eclipsing the entire European continent.

Despite the monumental rewards, gaining meaningful traction within the U.S. banking space remains an uphill battle. The domestic market is heavily fragmented and strictly governed by a complex web of multiple federal and state-level regulations. Furthermore, it is heavily populated by a diverse array of deeply entrenched competitors, ranging from community banks and regional lenders to Wall Street giants and established credit card companies that command fierce consumer loyalty.

The graveyard of international FinTech expansion attempts offers a cautionary tale for both Revolut and Nubank. Other prominent foreign digital banks have previously tried to establish a foothold in the country only to fall short of their lofty ambitions. Monzo, a major digital bank based in the U.K., provides a prime example of these challenges. Earlier this year, Monzo officially announced that it would retreat from the U.S. market entirely, choosing instead to reallocate its resources and focus squarely on strengthening its core European business operations.

Yet, executives at both Revolut and Nubank believe they possess the playbook necessary to succeed where others have stumbled. Both companies became household names in their respective home countries by directly taking on strong, historically established traditional banks and winning over millions of everyday consumers through superior user experiences and digital-first product suites.

Revolut currently stands as Europe’s most valuable startup, boasting a massive user base of 80 million customers spread across 40 different countries. The company has methodically built regulatory credibility by securing official banking licenses in key jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom and France. Meanwhile, Nubank has achieved unprecedented dominance in Latin America. It now commands the largest customer base of any private-sector lender in Brazil, while successfully executing a broader regional expansion strategy into neighboring markets such as Mexico and Colombia.

The strategic push into the United States aligns with broader generational shifts in how financial services are consumed, particularly among younger demographics. According to insights from the PYMNTS Intelligence report titled “The Gen Z Decoder Ring,” published in August 2025, Generation Z consumers serve as an essential and foundational pillar for the modern neobank proposition. However, capturing and retaining this demographic requires far more than basic app engagement or superficial digital interactions.

The research revealed that Generation Z consumers averaged an impressive 425 digital activity days per month. This figure is striking, representing over one-third more digital activity than the average consumer and more than double the rate observed among Baby Boomers. This high level of digital engagement underscores a fundamental change in consumer behavior.

Gen Z consumers express a strong preference for integrated, unified digital environments where daily financial activities—such as making payments, managing savings, and tracking spending—live together seamlessly within a single interface. Rather than treating banking as a discrete, isolated chore, younger consumers manage their personal finances using the exact same fluid interfaces and digital habits that they rely on for everyday commerce and personal communication.

As Revolut and Nubank roll out their services to American consumers, their ability to deliver this kind of frictionless, integrated experience will likely determine whether they can overcome the formidable regulatory and competitive hurdles that have tripped up previous international neobanks. With billions in valuation and global market leadership on the line, the next chapter of their U.S. expansion efforts will test the true limits of digital-first banking on a global stage.

By PYMNTS | September 23, 2026 Revolut and Nubank, recognized globally as the two most-valued digital banks operating today, have set their sights on conquering the highly lucrative and notoriously difficult United States banking market.
