Manager Michael O’Neill has named an expanded 28-man panel for the upcoming matches, up significantly from the 23 players brought along for June’s summer double-header of friendlies against Guinea and France, as his young squad steps up both in quality and quantity for a rigorous Nations League campaign.

The schedule gets underway with an away fixture against Georgia on 25 September and concludes on 5 October with the return fixture against the same opposition at home. In between, O’Neill’s side will face Hungary at Windsor Park before traveling to Slovakia to take on Ukraine.

Reflecting on the unique logistical and physical demands of the demanding calendar, O’Neill admitted that the schedule presents a distinct hurdle, particularly for smaller football associations. However, he emphasized that his squad must adapt quickly, especially given that this punishing four-game window format will be deployed again next year ahead of the Euro 2028 qualifiers.

"I think for a smaller association, it poses more challenges if I’m honest. If a player picks up a calf strain the Saturday before we meet up, he’s going to miss four games. It’s a window that, I believe, is more beneficial for the bigger nations," O’Neill noted. "I’m sure within the period, players will get injured, two bookings and I think you’re suspended as well. It will be challenging, but it’s the way the window will be going forward."

Stepping Up to League B

Beyond the sheer frequency of the matches, this upcoming campaign represents a clear step up in competitive quality. The fixture list brings immediate elite tests, not least when facing Georgia and their standout attacker, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whom O’Neill rates among the best players in the world.

While Northern Ireland have actively sought out high-calibre friendlies over the past two and a half years against heavyweights such as Spain, France, Sweden, and Denmark—in addition to facing Germany during World Cup qualifying—these matches mark the nation’s return to the second tier of the UEFA Nations League for the first time since 2020.

During the previous League C campaign, Northern Ireland topped a competitive group that also featured Luxembourg, Belarus, and Bulgaria. That success ultimately secured a valuable safety net and a backdoor route into the World Cup play-offs earlier this year, though their journey was halted in Bergamo with a 2-0 defeat to Italy.

Naturally, winning promotion means securing a similar safety net for the upcoming Euro 2028 cycle will be considerably more difficult. Nevertheless, maintaining status in League B brings tangible strategic benefits; finishing in the top two of their group would place Northern Ireland in the second band of seeds for the qualifying draw in December.

"I do think it’s a group that is quite well matched in terms of where the teams are," O’Neill said when assessing their opponents. "Obviously some of the teams are ranked a lot higher than us, I don’t think we should be frightened by that. I think the games will be extremely tough, but I think it’s a great challenge."

The Absence of Conor Bradley

Drawing on his experiences with FIFA’s Technical Study Group at the World Cup, O’Neill observed how many matches at the global showcase "were decided by individual brilliance" rather than any overarching tactical or structural superiority from the winning sides. Yet, as Northern Ireland prepare for this crucial block of games, the manager must once again cope without the player within his own squad who is most capable of delivering those decisive moments.

While Isaac Price has increasingly emerged as a regular source of crucial goals, Liverpool’s Conor Bradley possesses a distinct talismanic influence. Since the beginning of 2025, however, the 23-year-old has endured a luckless run of fitness setbacks, missing seven of Northern Ireland’s international fixtures through a combination of injury and suspension.

Bradley remains sidelined following knee surgery undergone in January. He is expected to miss the entirety of this upcoming international campaign, with O’Neill noting last month that it would simply be a "bonus" to welcome his captain back onto the pitch before the start of the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign in March.

The statistical impact of Bradley’s absence underscores his importance to the team. Since a 1-0 win over Scotland in March 2024—the memorable occasion of Bradley’s first senior international goal—Northern Ireland have averaged 1.5 goals per game across 16 internationals when he has been available. In stark contrast, that scoring rate plummets to just 0.7 goals per game across the seven fixtures he has missed. Identifying and developing a different creative spark in Bradley’s continued absence will be vital to their offensive output during this window.

Youthful Squad Building for the Future

While there was understandable disappointment following the play-off loss to Italy in March, a long-term perspective has firmly taken root within the coaching staff, with a shared belief that this young squad’s most realistic pathway to major tournament qualification lies in the years ahead.

The youthful profile of the team is striking. Of the starting line-up that took to the field in Bergamo, only Hull City defender Paddy McNair, at 31 years old, is older than 26. Furthermore, the 28-man squad named by O’Neill boasts an average age of just 24, injected with even more youthful exuberance by the inclusion of a quartet of teenagers: Ceadach O’Neill, Kieran Morrison, Braiden Graham, and Tom Atcheson.

Aside from McNair, the only other players in the squad who have passed the age of 30 are central striking options Dion Charles, 30, and Josh Magennis, 36. Despite the experience of those veteran forwards, O’Neill is expected to continue placing his trust in 21-year-old Jamie Donley to lead the line as part of his long-term squad evolution.

The Tottenham Hotspur youngster has already scored twice in his 10 international caps and has started the last five consecutive matches for Northern Ireland. However, his development experienced a turbulent club campaign during the 2025-26 season, marked by loan spells at both Stoke City and Oxford United where regular minutes proved hard to come by.

Although he featured for Spurs during their pre-season preparations, Donley will spend the upcoming campaign on loan at Luton Town, returning to League One where he previously caught the eye during a successful stint with Leyton Orient in the 2024-25 season.

"What happened with Jamie last year was not really of Jamie’s doing," O’Neill said in defense of the young forward. "The game time at Stoke was, I think, unfair on the player, to be honest. The second loan he gets injured in his first game but the games he did play, he did well. I think the thing for Jamie is just to play regularly. I think he’s got all the attributes of a top, young player. He’s still a Tottenham player on a long-term contract and I think he’s gone to a good club."

For the first time since June 2022, Northern Ireland are preparing to navigate a demanding sequence of four international fixtures within a single window.
